Finding an affective chigger treatment to both treat the bites and to keep them at bay is hard at best, or so it seems.

Campers, hikers, hunters and fishermen are all at danger of becoming a meal for the infamous chigger.

Chiggers are so small you cannot see them. Therefore, it is tough to avoid them because you never know when they are on you and you never they have been on you until you start to itch and by then they are gone.

I believe the best chigger treatment there is, is avoidance or prevention. A strong offense is the best defense, or so they say. Use these tips to help steer clear of chigger attacks and enjoy your time outdoors more than ever.

When choosing your camp spot choose a place where the sun shines and away from the any brush or wood piles. Try to locate a place with lots of air circulation and low moisture area. Then clear away all the debris you can from where you will be camping. This will help move the chiggers away from where you are located.

Treat the intended camping area with a solution of soap and water spray and allow to dry for several hours if possible. You can also sprinkle sulfur in the area first. You can find sulfur at the local drug store. It may be called flowers of sulfur and it is a great treatment for chiggers and other little varmints.

If you rather to go with toxic chemicals you can use things like chlorpyrifos, diazinon and carbaryl to control the chiggers and ticks in your area.

It is possible to check for infestations, but by the time you have done the testing you can have the area under control and not need to worry about them. Just intend on taking preventive measures wherever you set up camp as matter of doing business.

There is no proven fool proof way to dress but there are some known ways to help deter the little fellows. Wear clothing of light color and loose fitting. It should have long sleeves and close weave so the chigger cannot just pass through it. Tuck the pants legs into your socks or into boots.

Insect repellents are available, both natural and naturally toxic. If you go for the toxic kind like DEET take attention not to spray it on your body. Apply it only to the clothing, paying particular attention to areas where chiggers can enter like cuffs and shirt fronts and around the waist line. If you get the stuff on your skin wash it off as quickly as possible.

If you use natural repellents like citronella oil or flowers of sulfur, you may apply it to anything exposed without fear of any toxic damage.

Chiggers are more likely to fasten to you if you sit around, giving them a chance to crawl on you. Keep moving and avoid wooded areas and areas where the grass grows tall as chiggers like to sit on the ends of bush leaves and tall grass blades where they can drop onto their intended host.

And last but not least, use the buddy procedure and dust each other off every hour or so to get rid of them before they can find an opening.

These are a few of the best chigger treatments available to keep from getting chigger bites to begin with.
